Evaluation of collaborative work.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have

applied them?

Through this part of the module i have found that my skills in idea generation have developed. I generally struggle with this part of my design practice but i felt working with a partner ( at times ) helped produce more ideas but also gave us the task of being super selective and decisive which at times hindered the design process. I applied this by not thinking narrowly and coming up with a number of ideas based around our concept.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your

design development process?

I felt that we researched sufficient information about the BME but felt a trip would of informed us more and maybe have given's us more springboards for ideas. I also felt that i could of research into more advertising campaigns which would of helped inform my design decision's and also given me inspiration.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I felt that through out this brief i have made good use of my organisation skills and time management. At times the work flow became confused i think this was due to the concept problems we faced at the start of the brief but when things needed to be done we arranged appropriate systems and time tables to enable us to finish the work for our own deadlines.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

Through out the brief i felt like i hadn't pushed my self to my fullest, i found it hard and difficult to work in a collaboration as at times i think communication was a struggle. I also felt that i couldn't work at my own pace which had a influence on my own work flow. To address this i need to be more organised in my planning and not fall into the trap think i will wait and see what has been done and then do what need to be done.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing

these?

1. Work at my own work rate and not fall in to the trap of waiting. this will help me create a amount of work i feel happy with.

2. I will be more decisive and and 'just do it' so i can make informed, and calculated decisions. This will help me develop my concept and act as a spring board for other ideas.

3. Create and stick to a time table, by doing this i will be able to deal with multiple tasks and briefs.

4. If working with a partner i will try and communicate more which will help the work flow and development of the brief.

5. Create more visual ideas and variation which again will help me decide on what work is most suitable for developing to a further stage.

Website rough V1.

Rough website i want it to be clear and non fussy showcasing my work rather than my website. I've linked in the colour way from my blog which ties in my identity as a brand. I still think there will be a few more version of my website before i decide on a final one.

Freddie's photo shoot treatments.

Freddie's photo shoot

Photo development for the first "don't just dream it" advertising campaign. Took both portrait and landscape photos so that we could expand the ad from bus stop advertisement space to advertisement on buses and through billboards.

We found it hard to replicate freddie mercury to the fullest without actually using a full freddie mercury costume.

I feel that the out fit in the picture just doesn't shout freddie mercury enough. if we were to do this again we would try and rent out or buy a full costume just so that the freddie mercury image is at it's clearest.

New revised brief.

Brief - Bring new customer to the british music experience.

Concept - Rekindle peoples lost passion for music.

Idea - Think of 5 things in your environment you can use as a musical instrument.

Audience - People who have lost there passion for music.

Using a mundane situation to exaggerate peoples lost passion for music and how they dream of being a famous music star.

My first ideas came in the form of rough story boards, after the crit the feed back for these was positive but i need to refine them to a higher quality. I have also thought about photo story boarding them as key frames.

Another thing that came from the crit was to see how i could push my story ideas further maybe into illustrations or as photography this something i will develop over the next week. We also need to come up with a tag line which Mitch is going to look at and also look at some more iconic type or suitable type to use with the advertisement idea.

Initial YCN/BME

I looked at a number of target audience and tried to adapt and tailor suit my concept to each one through different scenario's. I also used the key artist from the 'edge zones' at the BME as reference so it ties in with the BME experience.

After the crit it was made apparent that we needed to execute these ideas through either photo story boards or press adverts. Next step is generating ideas and situations to simplify the 'story' to a single image.

BME/YCN Collab

After the crit last week we decided to scrub are initial idea of changing the face of BME visuals, it was made apparent that the concept was weak and that the outcome would be mostly superficial.

I have documented the work i produced for this here and also some of the re-working of concept ideas and research to inform my concept decisions.

As a collaborative we have decided to work on two different concepts to see how far we can push the idea on our own and then evaluate them both and go for the strongest idea.

The first concept is , 'making people remember'. This idea came about from seeing how people tend to lose there passion for music as they age or other things become more important. The concept could be executed in different ways to appeal to a mixed demographic audience but all share a lost passion for music.

Our second concept is based upon the private hire space which is available for hire at the BME. This would be directed at corporate companies that are involved with or around music. ( HMV, PMT, Record labels, Booking agents etc.) The space could be used for private party's, award ceremonies, rock and pop gigs, cocktail receptions and private and corporate events.

Evaluation

I feel through this project I have selected research, which is appropriate to my brief. This has informed my design decisions and development. I felt looking at indent’s for the specific channel (MTV) helped me see what the targeted audience would appeal to. If I was to do this project again I would like to look more into stop frame animation to create a hand rendered look, which would tie in with my concept using the hand rendered imagery and sequences. This could give off a more authentic feel. I also feel that maybe looking more at pace would of helped me as I tended to edit to music, breaking existing title sequences might of given me ideas about pace and transitions which will of enhanced the final product.

I felt my Investigation and experimentation could have been more present on my blog and documented more. I found experimenting with my hand rendered type gave me ideas for storyboards and sequences. I felt that my quick scruffy design ideas and storyboards were he most effective for idea generations, as I tend to lose interest in something when I take a large amount of time on it. If I was to do this again I would take more time creating more storyboards that were a bit more refined and clear, this would help me make more refined decisions about composition and movement.

Through this module I felt I have developed a number practical skills such as time management and preparation. I found this to be a massive help especially when dealing with numerous amounts of file and design sheet. I also felt I have improved my practical skills in software, I have improved my finishing skills in illustrator and also learn't how to use completely new software After effects which has led me into a new way or working.

Documenting my work through this module has been my weak point I feel, not showing everything I did as test, or experiments. If I were to do this again I would try and document everything possible on my blog. This way I can easily go through my ideas and design practice, which will give me ideas for the future.

I felt that my final product met the brief; I felt that keeping the transitions and sequences simple made for a more effective motion graphic, hopefully keeping the audience engaged. If I was to do this again I would like to try and create more complex movements and transitions which would be possible thanks to my development of practical skills.

Things I will do differently next time.

1.Keep my work systematically saved so it would be easier to deal with at the final point of design.

2.Experiment more and document it through my blog.

3.Experiment more with colour .

4.Use imagery rather than just typography.

5.Use a varied mix of media.

Digital booklet + rationale

DVD packaging mock up 2

This is my 2nd mock up of my dvd packaging which includes 3d glasses and stickers. i may also include a mini booklet of a work file pdf if i have time.

new DVD menu screens

Initial TV illustration.

music credits menu.

Main menu.

Extras menu.

Contact me menu.

Back up work menu.

After I started to create my DVD in DVD studio pro i felt my initial ideas for the menu screens were a bit bland so I did some more, I added a illustration of a old TV to create that old skool vibe. This has made the Menu screens a little more interesting but I would like to maybe animate these menu's if need be.

3d Glasses

So to go with my 3d motion graphic i have decided to create some 3d glasses that will tie in with the rest of my stuff . such as the DVD case etc.

DVD packaging mock up

Here i have used the visual assets of the motion graphic to create a mock up of the dvd packaging. this gives the DVD a visual link through out. I will create different layout's and colour ways to develop the packaging further.

Final motion graphic

This is my final motion graphic for the 50 second title sequence for MTV's top 10 MC's of all time. I intend to create a 3d version as well which may take place as the final video instead.

alterations to motion graphic

After the crit it was mentioned that the type hierarchy of my final composition didn't read right so I made amendments. Here is the initial drawing i shall take into illustrator then take in to after effects.

Final crit 5 key questions.

1. Does the motion graphic hold the viewer? If not how can this be improved?

2. Is the black and white text enough? I find it makes the video clear and legible but I feel like something could be added.

3. Is it clear that the research taken has influenced and help me develop my motion graphic so it is suitable for my audience?

4. Is the visual quality and technical competence of my work present? Any ways of improving?

5. Is there enough evidence of critical awareness throughout my project, if not how could I improve on this.

Digital sketch book Part 2

DVD menu screens

DVD screen menu's for my interactive DVD. I want my menu screen's to link to the animation both visually and conceptually. Ive thought about putting the screen menu's on a old tv set to represent the 'taking it back' vibe.

Feed back form.

I found this feedback useful it has given me ideas for design context, ( artist research and inspiration) and design practice ( different animation ideas, colour ways and design development). I shall use this information and feedback to help enhance my final animation and design direction.

Test 5 colour

So after talking to a few people at collage it was mentioned that i maybe needed to add colour to the motion graphic. Ive thought about ways of adding colour without breaking my original concept rule of keeping it simple and taking it back to the 80's hip hop flyer look. I started thinking about what i could do about adding colour, I ended up messing around with overlays of red and blue to create colour and also a 3d effect when worn with 3d glasses with our very popular at the moment.

Test 4

This is my first 50 second test. It still needs touching up in composition and transitions but i am happy with it overall. I decided that breaking my 50 second clip into 10 x 5 second clips would make life easier and also enhance the animations as it meant a rhythm could be achieved and also kept it fresh and exciting, so not to bore the viewer. Im am going to try put different clips in different orders to see if one creates a better viewing experience than the previous ones.

Still need to get down some more story boards so i can get more ideas for movement down.
