OUGD 203.2 update

After talking to Leon at Mitternacht over the weekend we have decided that 12 monthly CD's would be unrealistic at this stage. So we have opted for 6 which works better on time scale and also on production as well as with the night as Mitternacht is pretty much every other month rather than monthly. Im just waiting on some blank 12" packaging so i can play around with fitting a cd in there and getting them made up.

We also thought we needed some where to show and distribute the CD mixes with a track list and artist info etc. As Mitternacht doesn't have a web site we though this could be the best way to go. Just a real simple website showcasing the mix CD's in there packaging and also on the front page some sort of motion graphic showing information about that month's event.

Still working on the small short web based video's some are working better than others but they look like they will do the job asked.

I did some stickers on he vinyal cutter of the mitternacht logo which went down a treat on the last event... so i'll produce some more.

And finally i also want to do some MASSIVE screen printed poster's for leon to give to the many record shops he visit's as a promotional tool. Even if the record shop dosen't put it up its still a gesture worth giving and is good PR. As we have to justify the point of working in A size paper im trying to think of ways of getting round this by maybe making the poster sqaure (again like a record sleeve) or some sort of other shape.

Thing to propose:

T-shirts
tickets
club visuals
entry bands
stationary

Product Range Distrobution

Rationale

I want to work within an area of design that interests me, allowing me to push my skills and own practice further and at the same time enjoying the subject of the brief. The area of design I want to work within is the culture and entertainment sector, which, I have an interest in outside of design and in particular design for music. I intend to work with a range of clients from major corporate money churning record labels to small independent records labels with a strong ethical outlook. I want to produce for both digital media and design for print. Working in a area’s of branding/marketing, advertising, promotion. Producing products such as music videos, album artwork, brand identity and point of sale using both image and type.

Statement of Intent (200 words)

PRODUCT- promotional material to create a brand awareness, motion graphics, animation, packaging, posters, letterheads and invoices etc.

RANGE – packaging series of audio CD’s, motion graphic and animation adverts. Set of ltd promotional posters.

DISTRIBUTION-This will relate with both print based design and design for digital as it realtes with the medium directly.

What will you produce and what will you propose?

I will produce a number of promotional animated and motion graphic adverts to be put on the internet, which will engage with the audience more than static information. A series of packaging for a monthly cd to be given away at events or available through the organisers. A limited run of screen-printed posters intended for records shop to promote the event brand. Stickers to be used as a form of viral communication. Stationary etc (letterheads, invoices) that will create a more professional look for the brand.

2.
BRIEF

In order to achieve this what brief will you be responding to (attach a copy ) and how will this fulfil your intentions?

Background

Ministry of Sound is an iconic, world-renowned brand, synonymous with dance music.
The club opened in London in September 1991 as a pioneering and unique venue at the forefront of a youth culture revolution, and over the past 17 years has played host to the biggest artists and DJs in the world. The record company which followed is now the biggest independent label in the world with countless No.1 albums and singles, and award-winning videos.
Today you can access Ministry of Sound through a range of products and media. It has international venues, national and international tours, releases over 170 compilations and chart topping singles annually, a radio station, collaborations with mobile networks, a music download site, electronics/audio ranges, clothing, vodka, fragrance ranges and ministryofsound.com.
The brand was established with a vision to do things better than, and different from, everyone else, and this belief is carried through everything we do. We are not afraid to break new ground, be provocative and challenge convention.

The Challenge

We have a history of unusual and creative brand awareness campaigns, from guerilla advertising to virals, all based around the distinctive logo. With so many new and varied products coming out, we feel it’s time to do this again, reminding people what the brand is all about and what it stands for.
We want to see exciting and innovative uses of the logo, that will gain the maximum amount of attention and get across to people what a unique and creative brand this is. We are open to all solutions and will pick and action the best idea for summer 2009.
The challenge is to demonstrate how the existing logo can be applied to different environments and media spaces. The brief is not to redesign the logo itself.
You can find the logo in the project pack at ycnonline.com

Brand Attributes

— Authentic. Coming from an original vision, remaining always relevant and giving you something to
believe in that ultimately makes you feel good.
— Iconic. The desire for people to love us and hate us while competing with others to be the best.
— Hedonistic. Fearlessly seeking pleasure through intensifying the here and now.
— Confident. The belief in our knowledge and expertise and the conviction to pursue an ideal.
— Maverick. Behaving deliberately non-conformist because it ‘feels right’ to nurture an
entrepreneurial spirit.

Deliverables
Please adhere to the deliverables guidelines in the Awards section at ycnonline.com. Full details on the judging process and associated timings can also be found online.

I intend to do the same as these brief using innovative promotion methods for the event mitternacht rather than ministry of sound.

3. RESEARCH

In responding to this brief what areas of research will you have to undertake? What activities will this involve? What material will this research generate?

PRIMARY SOURCES/MATERIAL
Ongoing conversation with the client dealing with there needs and wants - this will ensure I am producing material that the client is happy with and that the material is effective.going to event.

SECONDARY SOURCES/MATERIAL
Examples of promotion- seeing what has worked and is affective for others and what hasn’t worked.
Branding of records lables and events
Series of idents and stings.
Pacaking cd etc
Stationary material.

4. PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT

In responding to this brief what practical skills, workshop facilities and production methods will you use? What activities will this involve? At what point in the brief will you use them? What will they help you to achieve?

I intend to use practical skills involving concept building idea generation, storyboarding, layout, motion graphic and animation. This will involve generating ideas for promotion, storyboarding for the animation/motion graphic, production of the motion graphic/animation, layout ideas for promotional poster as well as using the screen-printing workshop to produce this. I will also use a vinyl cutter to produce the stickers. At first I will need to generate ideas and develop them to a point where I can take them further into production then I can start using the workshop’s and facilities to produce the products. After this I can evaluate these and see if or what needs to change adapt etc.

5. RECORDING, DOCUMENTATION & EVALUATION

What methods will you use to record, document and evaluate your progress practical and contextual investigations in response to this brief? How will you get feedback? How and when will you evaluate your progress and what will you evaluate your progress against?

I will use my blog as an ongoing service of evaluation gaining feedback from peers and the client as well as my own reflective thoughts. I will also be using a work diary, which I will re jig and plan everyday. This way I can evaluate my progress through checking if want needs to be done has been done and whether it has been done effectively. This will also give me chance to time manage properly which will help me achieve what I want to produce in the time scale provided.

Building and breaking down briefs

During yesterday session i found that i wanted to produce work in a specific area for a targeted audience. The idea was around taking the chosen briefs and breaking them down into why you choose them. Did you choose the brief so you could do what YOU wanted to do or did you choose the brief because you wanted to meet the clients needs ie. do you feel more comfortable doing client led work or do you feel more comfortable doing design led by the designer.

One thing that was made clear was that with a brief you need CONTENT,PRODUCT and CONTEXT. These three components are constantly evolving though and can be taken from one area to another for example.

CONTENT- ENVIRONMENT
PRODUCT- TYPEFACE
CONTEXT- TYPE DESIGN
CONTENT- TYPEFACE
PRODUCT- WEBSITE
CONTEXT- WEB DESIGN

I also found this exercise useful for helping with my PPD and allowing me decide on a direction for specialism in the future. It also made me re-look at briefs so i could choose one with a suitable content as i find i need to be given a problem or message to communicate rather than just come up with one myself.

Current TV is the new brief from the YCN, The idea is to create a TV ads/stings around the theme of participation.

CONTENT- CURRENT TV
PRODUCT- MOTION GRAPHIC/ANIMATION/STOP MOTION .ETC
CONTEXT- TV

Finally 10 things that make the best brief.

1. Clear content
2. Enjoyable/fun/appropriate
3. Defined audience
4. Specific outcomes
5. Appropriate tone of voice
6. Scope for development
7. Clear deadlines
8. Realistic expectations
9. A audience i can relate with
10. written by me. ha

Evaluation of collaborative work.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have

applied them?

Through this part of the module i have found that my skills in idea generation have developed. I generally struggle with this part of my design practice but i felt working with a partner ( at times ) helped produce more ideas but also gave us the task of being super selective and decisive which at times hindered the design process. I applied this by not thinking narrowly and coming up with a number of ideas based around our concept.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your

design development process?

I felt that we researched sufficient information about the BME but felt a trip would of informed us more and maybe have given's us more springboards for ideas. I also felt that i could of research into more advertising campaigns which would of helped inform my design decision's and also given me inspiration.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I felt that through out this brief i have made good use of my organisation skills and time management. At times the work flow became confused i think this was due to the concept problems we faced at the start of the brief but when things needed to be done we arranged appropriate systems and time tables to enable us to finish the work for our own deadlines.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

Through out the brief i felt like i hadn't pushed my self to my fullest, i found it hard and difficult to work in a collaboration as at times i think communication was a struggle. I also felt that i couldn't work at my own pace which had a influence on my own work flow. To address this i need to be more organised in my planning and not fall into the trap think i will wait and see what has been done and then do what need to be done.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing

these?

1. Work at my own work rate and not fall in to the trap of waiting. this will help me create a amount of work i feel happy with.

2. I will be more decisive and and 'just do it' so i can make informed, and calculated decisions. This will help me develop my concept and act as a spring board for other ideas.

3. Create and stick to a time table, by doing this i will be able to deal with multiple tasks and briefs.

4. If working with a partner i will try and communicate more which will help the work flow and development of the brief.

5. Create more visual ideas and variation which again will help me decide on what work is most suitable for developing to a further stage.

Website rough V1.

Rough website i want it to be clear and non fussy showcasing my work rather than my website. I've linked in the colour way from my blog which ties in my identity as a brand. I still think there will be a few more version of my website before i decide on a final one.

Freddie's photo shoot treatments.

Freddie's photo shoot

Photo development for the first "don't just dream it" advertising campaign. Took both portrait and landscape photos so that we could expand the ad from bus stop advertisement space to advertisement on buses and through billboards.

We found it hard to replicate freddie mercury to the fullest without actually using a full freddie mercury costume.

I feel that the out fit in the picture just doesn't shout freddie mercury enough. if we were to do this again we would try and rent out or buy a full costume just so that the freddie mercury image is at it's clearest.

New revised brief.

Brief - Bring new customer to the british music experience.

Concept - Rekindle peoples lost passion for music.

Idea - Think of 5 things in your environment you can use as a musical instrument.

Audience - People who have lost there passion for music.

Using a mundane situation to exaggerate peoples lost passion for music and how they dream of being a famous music star.

My first ideas came in the form of rough story boards, after the crit the feed back for these was positive but i need to refine them to a higher quality. I have also thought about photo story boarding them as key frames.

Another thing that came from the crit was to see how i could push my story ideas further maybe into illustrations or as photography this something i will develop over the next week. We also need to come up with a tag line which Mitch is going to look at and also look at some more iconic type or suitable type to use with the advertisement idea.

Initial YCN/BME

I looked at a number of target audience and tried to adapt and tailor suit my concept to each one through different scenario's. I also used the key artist from the 'edge zones' at the BME as reference so it ties in with the BME experience.

After the crit it was made apparent that we needed to execute these ideas through either photo story boards or press adverts. Next step is generating ideas and situations to simplify the 'story' to a single image.

BME/YCN Collab

After the crit last week we decided to scrub are initial idea of changing the face of BME visuals, it was made apparent that the concept was weak and that the outcome would be mostly superficial.

I have documented the work i produced for this here and also some of the re-working of concept ideas and research to inform my concept decisions.

As a collaborative we have decided to work on two different concepts to see how far we can push the idea on our own and then evaluate them both and go for the strongest idea.

The first concept is , 'making people remember'. This idea came about from seeing how people tend to lose there passion for music as they age or other things become more important. The concept could be executed in different ways to appeal to a mixed demographic audience but all share a lost passion for music.

Our second concept is based upon the private hire space which is available for hire at the BME. This would be directed at corporate companies that are involved with or around music. ( HMV, PMT, Record labels, Booking agents etc.) The space could be used for private party's, award ceremonies, rock and pop gigs, cocktail receptions and private and corporate events.
